QUESTION: WHAT ARE ORBS?

I have been taking pictures inside my house with a digital camera and almost on every picture there are orbs, no matter what time of day or night it is.

A couple of months ago I started painting religious statues. Could that be the reason they are showing up so often?

Also, could you please tell me what exactly an orb is? Is each one a separate spirit? That's what I was told and I don't know if it is true. Also, are they something I should be afraid of.?

                             Thank You
                               Valerie

ANSWER:

Dear Valerie:

There are all sorts of explanations for the "orb," phenomenon. In the 1992 picture of my family here, the "orbs" are actually snowflakes!

Dust, lens effects, geomagnetic phenomena, light angles, electrical fields, light leaks (if you're using film) or defects in your digital camera or standard film all can cause orbs or other effects people will point to excitedly as paranormal. When we see orbs with the naked eye, often they are just static electricity firing off in our optic nerves.

So the first thing I suggest is to get a proper cleaning solution and clean your camera lens. If you're still getting orbs in your photos, you're welcome to e-mail a few to me and I'll be happy to take a look, along with Eric Baillargeon, one of my photo experts.

I certainly can testify that there are orbs for which I can see no explanation but a paranormal one. Heck, I've seen them often enough with the naked eye when investigating some cases, such as the one described on the "Ghosts of Rhode Island" page on this website. I've seen them in several different colors. I've been followed by them, and I've seen them manifest what I can only interpret as consciousness and even intelligence.

So what are paranormal orbs?

When all other possibilities are exhausted, I think there might be some truth to the theory about orbs being spirits, or at least electrical manifestations of the presence of spirits.

Of course, that begs the question:  "What is a spirit?"

Since I don't believe in death, I don't believe in spirits of the dead. I do believe in contact, conscious or otherwise,- with living people -- and non-human entities -- from other times and places. When they come through a space-time hole into our own consciousness, I believe it's these phenomena that are responsible for humankind's experiences of ghosts, demons, fairies (you name it) and possibly even extraterrestrials.

UFOs come to mind. Plenty of photos of them look to me like photos of orbs.

I'm also partial to the theory that, as some believe, orbs may be plasma- or electrically-based life forms of a kind all their own. There is a little-known theory about "rods" or "skyfish" that I think is fascinating. Checkout http://www.roswellrods.com/pre.html.

What interests me is that, at least in my experience, orbs are much more common than they used to be. When I'd take case photos 20 or 25 years ago, I'd rarely notice orbs. While they'd show up in troubled homes now and then, they didn't seem to be a major phenomenon. Today, they're all over the place. Perhaps modern film and photographic equipment are more apt to pick them up, though I have no doubt that many purported photos of paranormal orbs have mundane explanations.

As well as cleaning your lens, I'd ask if there are any other CLEAR and OBVIOUS phenomena going on in your house that could indicate a paranormal problem.

Based on the little information I have about your situation, I doubt if these orbs have anything to do with the statues. And I'd certainly say that you have nothing to be afraid of.

I hope that helps. Sorry I can't give you a "black and white" answer to some of your questions. Frankly, I don't think there is one.

All the best,

Paul Eno

QUESTION: MORE TO IT?

Mr. Eno,

I read your answer to my question. I have taken pictures at other people's houses at a wedding, inside, outside  and I never get orbs on any of those pictures. I realize that it could have been dust on the lens so I always cleaned off the lens before I took the pictures.

There have always been strange things that happened in my house from the day we moved in. That is why I thought the orbs were something paranormal. Here are a couple of examples. I have been awakened from my sleep only to feel pinned down with something very heavy on my chest unable to move or scream, so I would start praying and it would go away. Then I was able to move, although at that point I was to scared to move.

I also feel my bed shake. My husband has never felt the bed shake until this summer when he said he felt like something was walking on the bed. He got out of bed twice to turn on the light to see what it was and there was nothing there. On one occasion my husband left the bedroom. I thought he had returned to the bed and put his arm around me, only to turn around and find nobody was there. I know this sounds crazy but it really happened.

My daughter hates to stay in the house by herself. She feels like someone is always watching her. She also has heard banging in her room at night. The TV volume would also turn up by itself, my blow dryer was plugged in and it  turned on by itself and started smoking. There was a magazine underneath it, and I believe if no one was home there would have been a fire. The answering machine has started up when the phone did not even ring.

I also feel that someone is always standing right behind me to my left. I have heard a male voice call my name more than once. It also seems that me and my daughter notice these things more than my husband and my son. My son's girlfriend told me last year around Christmastime that she had seen a woman standing in my kitchen, with a long black dress. I have never seen her.

These are some of the strange things that have happened. I have lived here for almost nine years. I am sending you some pictures could you please email me back and tell me what you think.

Valerie

ANSWER:

Dear Valerie:

Well, you certainly answered my question about whether there is more going on in your house than just orbs! It certainly appears that you have a problem.

Please follow the advice in WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE A GHOST PROBLEM

This almost certainly will ease or even cure the situation. If not, you have a very serious problem and I will have to suggest other steps.

Keep me posted!

Paul

P.S. I never got any pictures from you.

QUESTION: GHOST HUNTING AND COMFORTING SPIRITS

Dear Paul,

I enjoy reading  your page & found it very informative. I'm interested in doing ghost hunts or investigating. You say only to do it with someone experienced & I would obey that. Do you know any groups that take the necessary precautions in the Boston area? .

I think I may have a ghost in my house. It's only 13 yrs old. My wife's Aunt & Uncle lived here & they both past .Sometimes I get the feeling of being watched or I feel a cold spot. I don't feel scared or anything, its kind of comforting in a way. A couple of times I could of sworn I saw  an older woman standing at the top of my stairs watching me and smiling (out of the corner of my eye) while I watch TV .Then I go to look & nothing is there.

I believe its my wife's Aunt just watching over us. Any thoughts? Thanks for your time.

 Anthony

ANSWER:

Dear Anthony:

As to ghost hunting, in Boston or anywhere else, any investigator or group worth its salt wouldn't take you with them unless you had some professional qualification.

As you can well imagine, I'm drowning in e-mails from people who want me to take them with me on an investigation, as though I were running some sort of paranormal tour service. Years ago, before I knew better, I did that a few times and almost always regretted it. While I respect anyone with a sincere desire to learn, it's like asking a doctor to let you stand in the operating room and watch an open-heart surgery in progress.

No matter how genuine your interest or how seriously you approach the subject, you could be a distraction at best and, at worst, you could cause serious consequences for the "patient" and even yourself. I'm sure you've read my advice on this elsewhere on this site.

It would be a different story if you were a physicist, electrical engineer, psychotherapist or some other relevant professional.

In the matter of your house, my first two questions would be: Do any other members of your family experience these things? and Is your own interest in the paranormal influencing your mind's interpretation of what you experience in your house?

If the answers are "no" and "yes," respectively, this doesn't necessarily mean that you aren't experiencing paranormal phenomena, but you may first want to look at personal, medical or at least more mundane explanations. Of course, "afterimages" in the eyes while watching TV are common.

If it really is paranormal, it may indeed be a relative watching over you. Nothing unusual about that. Nevertheless, I'd wonder why her manifestations are so obvious: What is she protecting you from? The cold spots you mention come to mind, as I have never found this directly associated with a loved one. Of course, the cold spots could just be drafty rooms or gummed up heating, relatively new house or not..

In any case, I'd do what I suggest in WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE A GHOST PROBLEM. It never hurts,

If what you tell me is all there is to it, I'd say the situation bears monitoring, but I don't think you have a serious problem at this point.

QUESTION: WHAT TO DO ABOUT OUIJA BOARD SPIRIT

Dear Paul:

We were talking to a spirit (on a Ouija board) and we thought we had said goodbye but he's haunting our house...how can we get him back into the board?

Amanda

ANSWER:

Dear Amanda:

It's not a matter of "getting him back into the board."

First of all, stop use of the Ouija board immediately. Better yet, destroy it. Then follow the suggestions I make in WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE A GHOST PROBLEM

Remember: YOU are in control, not the entity, regardless of its origin!

QUESTION: WHAT TO DO ABOUT PESTY GHOST

I hope you can give me some answers.  My husband and I have been experiencing visits from a ghost who is moving small objects and taking things.

We see a ghost of a woman standing in our hallway and our bedroom door.  Many things have gone missing (there were no other people present in our house during this time) and some things have reappeared in the strangest of places.

Also the stereo has been turned up and down on several occasions.  We think it may be my husband's dead mother who died 5 years ago.  How do we ask her what she wants and get her to stop her silly tricks?

Thank you,

Shelley

ANSWER:

Dear Shelley:

Without visiting your house, knowing you, your husband or your mother-in-law, I can but venture an educated guess or two.

If there's nothing more to your situation than you describe, I'd say it's a pretty good bet that you're dealing with one or more parasites. "Silly tricks" are typical of the first stages of an infestation. Often, it never goes beyond the first stages if you limit or cut off its/their food supply (negative emotional energy). So I suggest you follow the steps in WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE A GHOST PROBLEM.

As for the apparition, does it ignore you or interact with you?

If it ignores you, it's probably a time displacement and has nothing to do with the other phenomena. If it interacts with you, it's probably a parasite trying to "push your buttons." If it were your mother-in-law, your and your husband almost certainly would recognize her, and she almost certainly wouldn't be in a position to make trouble.

QUESTION: HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH BASEMENT GHOSTS

even if u haven't been to my house do u know how to tell if a spirit is bad? I

also wondered if u could tell me how to communicate with these spirits because they don't seem to be the very social kind of bunch.

ANSWER:

What makes you think you have spirits in your basement? Does anyone else in your household sense these things?

Being a basement, the first thing I'd look for is an appliance, like a furnace fan, that could be producing VLF sound waves, which can produce most basic ghost phenomena.

Beyond that, NEVER TRY TO COMMUNICATE. If it really is some kind of entity that causes negative phenomena, it's not your friend.

Follow the advice in WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE A GHOST PROBLEM.

QUESTION: WHERE TO STUDY PARAPSYCHOLOGY

i was wondering where I should go to school for parapsychology and any other information about the career that you could offer me...i have not been able to find people or places that have been able to help me with this question...

also, i was wondering if you could briefly say what is on the page about having a ghost problem because it is not working and i think (almost know) that there is one in my house as well as my friend's. Thank you very much...

Kelly

ANSWER:

Dear Kelly:

Bravo to you for your desire to study parapsychology seriously!

Unfortunately, there are very few places that offer a graduate parapsychology program and, even if you get an advanced degree in the subject, even fewer career opportunities. Teaching, writing and research are the greatest possibilities, but plan on having a second job unless you can become a pop psychologist like Dr. Ruth..

First off, stick with real universities. Beware of "pop" parapsych courses offered at pseudo-educational institutions by people with mail-order doctorates. They'll take your money and leave you with a worthless piece of paper.

When looking for grad courses in America, bear in mind that parapsychology studies often are buried in new curricula and euphemistic terms, such as the Consciousness Studies Program (offering a master's degree) at John F. Kennedy University, San Francisco Bay area, California. JFKU has a Graduate School of Holistic Studies and offers, believe it or not, a graduate Dream Studies Certificate.

Another good place is the Rhine Research Center Institute for Parapsychology in Durham, N.C., direct descendent of the old Duke University Parapsychology Laboratory. They offer study programs in parapsychology. They're right near Duke's East Campus, at 402 N. Buchanan Blvd.
Durham, NC 27701-1728. Their phone number is (919) 688-8241.

I think there are more study opportunities in Britain. Check out the Psychology Division at the University of Hertfordshire, College Lane, Hatfield, Herts., AL10 9AB England.

There's also Dr. Chris Roe at the Psychology Department, University College Northampton, Boughton Green Road, Northampton NN2 7AL, England

AND:

Dr. Tony Lawrence, School of Health and Social Sciences, Coventry University, Priory Street, Coventry CV1 5FB England.

An especially good place, in my opinion, is the Dept. of Psychology at the University of Edinburgh, George Sq., Edinburgh EH8 9JZ Scotland.

Hope this helps!

As to your other questions, try this link. If it doesn't work, let me know and I'll just e-mail the thing.

QUESTION: HOW TO DO SÉANCES!!!

hello. i am one person who feels that i have a deep connection with the other world. i need to know how to do seances!!! please tell me what to do....

ANSWER:

I'll tell you what to do, alright.

Everyone has a deep connection with the other worlds, but you apparently didn't read this whole site, especially the page where I talk about séances.

Séances are dangerous, especially for people like you, who have convinced themselves of some self-appointed mission. Pull your head out of the ground and get a life! Forget séances and learn to pray instead!

Excuse me for being abrupt, but I have no patience with this nonsense!

QUESTION: WHY DON'T I SEE THE GHOSTS EVERYONE ELSE DOES?

Dear Mr. Eno:

Now our house is "haunted" not by bad ghosts. They've never done anything bad but everyone has seen them but me.... There were two old people that lived here before us and they both died and apparently that's who it is. And my mom claims to have seen my dog running up over the hill all happy like she always did, but this was probably a year after she disappeared....

I was just curious as to why I've never seen any ghosts.

Jon

ANSWER:

Is there any interaction between these ghosts and your family members? If it's minimal or zero, I'd say you live on or near some geomagnetic energy that plays tricks with time. The dog incident (if it wasn't some other dog that just looked like yours) is good evidence for that, in my opinion. You probably haven't seen anything because you're less sensitive to these energies than everyone else or you just haven't been in the right place at the right time.

From what you say, the ghosts are just glimpses "around the corner of time" to the people who lived there before you, as was the glimpse of the dog running over the hill.

QUESTION: WHAT TO DO WHEN VACATIONING IN HAUNTED PLACES

Hi.

I happened upon your website and am pleasantly pleased to see you give information that we can use or decide not to do. I have been interested in ghosts for a long time and am addicted to the new ghost shows on TV. However, as an anniversary present we will spend two nights in one of the most haunted places in America. What do I do while I am there, and how do I avoid trespassing on their ground?

I believe in ghosts, It may be okay to have a brief visit to their domain, but, I do not feel right in staying two nights in their place. I do not want to disturb the spirits. I know that through dreams, unacceptingly at times, that I have a foresight for what is to come with my family (I have proven it time and again). I feel I do not want to disturb anything there, but on the other hand I am in dire need of a vacation. Am I making too much out of this? What do I do when I am there to avoid communication?

Michelle

ANSWER:

Dear Michelle:

Yes, I think you're making too much out of it. If you're sensitive to the energies I describe on this website, you are likely to have experiences no matter where you are.

As to "haunted inns" and all that, I find that many of them are exaggerated and that stories feed visitors' imaginations so that they see and hear things whether they're seeing or hearing things or not.

In real haunted places, I think you're more likely to run into time slips. In that case, enjoy it. If you think you've got a parasite, just take the defensive measures I suggest in WHAT TO DO IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE A GHOST PROBLEM.

QUESTION: WHAT IS THE SHADOW IN THIS PHOTO?

ANSWER

Dear Lynne:

I find the streaks of light in the upper left more telling than the shadow. This is typical of a slightly stuck camera shutter. I'll venture that this was taken with a standard 35-mm SLR camera. The slight blurriness of the photo and the shadow in the lightest part of the photo indicates overexposure of the film because the shutter stayed open too long.

That's my interpretation.

QUESTION: WHAT DO YOU MEAN, 'THEY'RE NOT OUR FRIENDS?'

i dont understand how you can say their not your friend.i have had what i believe to be a ghost in my house as far back as i can remember.i have learned to talk to it as a normal person. i believe it watches over me.iv had creepy feelings and presences but in the end it comforts me.

Future ghost hunter

ANSWER:

Dear 'Future':

If you read this entire site, you'll see that in several places I acknowledge the presence and influence of good spirits. But I stress CAUTION, CAUTION, CAUTION! Telling one kind of spirit from the other takes what the Christians call "discernment": the gift of being able to tell what a spirit really is.

As I say elsewhere, a positive presence probably is a loving ancestor. It almost always will feel warm and natural. You don't need to do anything in particular to encourage it or link up with it.

But you should realize that your house may not even have a presence of the kind you describe. It could be just a standing wave or a geomagnetic phenomenon. Believe me, if it is a spirit and IF YOU DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH IT, DON't MAKE YOURSELF FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH IT. You're just being a sap by engaging in wishful thinking. If it plays games with your mind, plays Frisbee with grandma's fine china or otherwise exhibits hostility, it really ISN't YOUR FRIEND.

QUESTION: WHAT'S A NON BELIEVER TO DO?

Hi I just read your "what to do" section and I have a couple questions. I am not part of an organized religion and frankly do not believe in heaven or hell. I believe that there is another plain that we go to after death ,and I was just wondering what I should do if I ever encounter somthing like this. because I don't belive a clergy member or a cross or anything of that nature really has any thing to do with the paranormal.

Also by not trying to comunicate do you mean to not communicate with a oujia board or automatic writing or do you mean any communication is bad such as using a tape recorder because I have been under the impression that a tape recorder is ok to use.

The reason I ask this is I am a 15 yr old and am really interested in becoming a paranormal investigator or "ghost hunter". And I would like to know as much as I can about the topic so that when I do start investigating I know exactly what to do and how do deal with many different things.

Thanks for your time,

Tyler

ANSWER:

Dear Tyler:

Thank you for the two excellent questions!

In my experience, it's very clear that the power of religious articles of any kind comes from the faith people have in them. Faith -- in anything that's good, loving and positive beyond ourselves -- is a powerful force in gathering our own inner strength to take control of a paranormal situation or anything else in life.

So, no. If the cross has no power in your life, it won't do you any good in a paranormal situation. If you did use one without faith, I'd scold you for being superstitious!

Anything that marshals your love, courage and unity with others can do the trick -- a picture of a loved one, say. I've even seen teddy bears work for scared children. The point is, the power is in you, the object is just a tool to help summon it.

As for communication, I definitely mean NOT through a seance or Ouija board. Many people write to me telling of inadvertant telepathic communication. That's different because you aren't consciously seeking it out. Still, it calls for caution! Many, many times, I've seen people get chummy with entites they thought were Grandpa, only to have the whole thing get nasty after the thing had sucked enough energy out of them to reveal its true colors.

As I say elsewhere, it takes maturity, common sense and discernment to tell one paranormal phenomenon from another. Loving ancestors or helping spirits aren't "creepy," don't make trouble and usually aren't all that obvious. In my book, all the others are parasites or natural phenomena until proven otherwise.

I have no problem with tape recorders, though I'm a real skeptic on EVP (electronic voice phenomena). There are a hundred possible non-paranormal explanations.

Best of luck!

QUESTION: WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THESE PHOTOS?

Hello Mr. Eno,

These photos were taken by myself and my fiance' in what we are told is a haunted cemetery in Attleboro, Mass. The two friends that brought us there state that it is a well known cemetery because of a supposed glowing gravestone. We didn't see it glow, unfortunately.  Also we admire your work and are very interested in the supernatural.

Nicole

ANSWER:

Hello, Nicole,

Thanks for sending the photos. As I've said elsewhere, I'm undecided as to the nature of orbs, but it looks as though you may have a few in these photos. I would, of course, make sure that your lens is clean.

I should say, too, that I'm very wary about flash photos taken at night, especially in cemeteries. Everything from bugs in the air to shiny gravestones will bounce the light back at you.

Thanks also for your kind words!

QUESTION: A MYSTERIOUS VOICE

On occassion, I have heard a voice, usually male but not familiar, saying my name.  On most occassions, I have been home alone, except for the dog.  One time, my husband was home and I went out and asked him if he had called me.  He said no.

I should mention that one time it happened and my dog tracked someone moving through the living room that I couldn't see.  She then stared at one spot for over a minute but no one was there, at least to my eyes.  I am slightly sceptical that I might be hearing things but it has consistently happened at least 5 times.  4 of the times I've been alone and with no television or other devices on.  The dog incident just seemed to add to my belief that I had a visitor.  I have made no effort to communicate back in anyway, especially since I didn't know the voice.  I'm just curious if there's some basis to this or if I'm truly hearing things.

Thank you,

Heidi

ANSWER:

Dear Heidi:

I agree that the dog incident -- if the critter actually was tracking an unseen presence -- is one indication that your experiences might be external rather than internal (psychological). Hearing a voice -- strange or familiar -- calling your name in a common phenomenon in many of the cases I've dealt with.

If there's nothing more to it than what you say, I'd bet that you're dealing more with a parallel-life experience. In any case, you're doing the right thing by not trying to communicate.

QUESTION: WHAT ABOUT THE SHAKING BED!?

Hi there, this may or may not interest you. It comes from Salem Ma. In the third floor apartment my girlfriend lived and on a fairly regular basis we experienced a rocking movement of the bed, no joke! Being a builder who is used to old homes I instinctively dismissed the movement as being caused by water pipes or the like, however, the are no water pipes on this side of the house and there are no close railroad tracks and furthermore the only thing moving at all in the room would be the bed. At one point my brother was over to watch football and I told him about what was happening. He was skeptical, but then sure enough as if on cue it started happening. I remained quiet, after a moment he turned and asked,"is it doing it now"? One occasion during the night not only did the bed start to move but also the wine glasses, held upside down in their holder in an entertainment center started to move back and forth ever so slightly. I got up and took a closer look and to my surprise, only the center glass, in a row of three, was moving only enough to lightly cling up against the others without slowing. As for the movement of the bed, it didn't happen at specific times and would go on for anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes at a time. We never felt frightened but it was unsettling. I have never been one to believe in these thing in the past!! The house is at least 100 years old and is now an apartment . Once again there is no plumbing on that side of the house that could possibly cause this to happen! This was last year and I would be interested to hear your opinion of this if you were ever to have the time to spare.

Mark

ANSWER:

Dear Mark:

One of the benefits of being a ghost hunter is that one does not expect one's own house to be haunted. But I myself woke up on several occasions last year to a shaking bed! Also, in the upstairs hallway at night, I suddenly felt the electrical tingle I've always associated with paranormal events and presences, though much weaker than I usually find in a troubled house.

So I took my own advice: I looked for a mundane explanation before assuming that I had a paranormal problem. I scanned the upstairs with my trusty ELF meter (which measures magnetic fields) and, sure enough, I found that the filter pump on my son's aquarium was putting out up to 2,000 milligauss (mg), high enough to create a health hazard. I also found that this filter was producing VLF sound waves, which I knew can cause basic paranormal phenomena -- like shaking glasses.

We dumped the pump and all phenomena ceased immediately!

I think that for your shaking bed and wine glasses, VLF is probably the explanation. Check your appliances and electrical devices to see if they're humming or vibrating. If so, try unplugging them for awhile to see if things quiet down. Of course, VLF waves are too low for us to hear so you may have to experiment. I think your "ghost" may well be a major appliance!

QUESTION: THE SUICIDE AND THE DOG

Hi,

Curious about something and was hoping you could give some answers.  I had bought  a house about 3 years ago and the previous owner had committed suicide in the garage.  I haven't had any "weird" things happen or any strange vibes until I got a  dog.  Now I have 2 cats that are strictly indoors and have never acted odd, but the dog seems fascinated with the garage. She will sit and paw at the door, (which is in the living room) and will growl at me and moan until I let her go in and sniff around. Of course there is nothing there and I call her back into the living room.  This doesn't occur every night, but frequently and tonight was one of those nights.  She acted strange for quite some time and was constantly trying to get my attention.  My room-mate said that the other night he awoke and saw a greenish glow in his room. Now both of us are rational people but we can't totally dismiss the possibility of something odd going on in this house.  My question is this,... Are dogs more capable of sensing paranormal presence's more than cats or humans?  Is it safe to assume that because nothing has occurred prior to us getting a dog that this could be our imagination?  Just curious,

Char

ANSWER:

Dear Char:

I've found that all species are highly sensitive, but that most people's sensitivity is atrophied. Even with animals, some individuals are more sensitive than others. I've often done preliminary investigations in homes only to find that the people -- and animals -- are just highly sensitive and are just picking up extradimensional stimuli, which exist all over the place anyway. You may just have an ultrasensitive dog.

As I say elsewhere on this site, whether you have paranormal problems depends largely on you. If you and other household members are full of positive energy, you can live in a house where 10 suicides have taken -- or will take -- place and have little or no trouble.

Naturally, the dog probably is making you nervous or annoyed, but at this point, from what you say, I don't think you have anything to worry about.

Paul
